The Crown-Of-Thorn (Acanthaster planci) starfish is a coral reef predator (a corallivore) that preys on the coral polyps.
They are voracious predators that can wipe out large coral areas; one C-O-T can consume 6 sq.m. of living reef per year.
C-O-T has thorn-like toxic spines around its body. Accidentally touched or stepped on by humans it inflicts great pain for hours, as well as vomiting and nausea. It is important that C-O-T spine is completely removed from body.
• To terminate C-O-T in dive areas
• To organize teams and trainors to educate local communities to be proactive
• To study and monitor C-O-T cycle for optimum eradication/ implementation
• To document project’s plan and implementation
• To raise funds and support to sustain the project |
